Kinesiology Taping
Performance in Motion: The Benefits of Equine Kinesiology Taping
Unlike traditional athletic tape that restricts movement, kinesiology tape is designed to mimic the elasticity of skin and hair. It works by gently lifting the hair and the top layer of skin, creating "space" in the tissue below.
Common Uses for Equine Tape
Muscle Support
Sore backs, tight hamstrings, or weak toplines.
Lymphatic Support
Encouraging healthy fluid movement in the legs, such as when a horse "stocks up."
Postural Support
Helping a horse engage their core or track straighter.
Fascia Release
Improving flexibility and smoothing out "stuck" movement.
How Taping Can Help Your Horse
Comfort & Recovery: By gently lifting the skin, the tape is designed to ease pressure in the tissue and support your horse’s comfort after a hard workout.
Improved Circulation: The "lifting" effect encourages healthy blood and lymph flow, which can help with stocking up.
Neuromuscular Re-education: The tape provides constant sensory input to the brain, helping horses "re-learn" how to use a specific muscle group or improve their proprioception (body awareness).
Support Without Restriction: It offers gentle support around joints and soft tissue while allowing a full range of motion—perfect for the active equine athlete.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it hurt to take off?
Not at all. Most equine tapes use a specialized adhesive that bonds to the hair but releases cleanly without pulling.
How long does it stay on?
Depending on the horse’s environment and the location of the tape, applications typically last 2 to 5 days.
Can I ride with it?
Yes, for groundwork! Taping during in-hand or lunging work can enhance your horse’s awareness of their movement patterns. I don’t recommend taping under the saddle area while riding, since friction can loosen the tape.
